Migrate OneDrive accounts to another tenant

OneDrive is the trickiest part of a tenant change: admins cannot open it by default, and each one belongs to a person. The tool handles access and gives it back at the end.

Short answer

Tauri Migration copies a whole OneDrive to another OneDrive, or folders between a OneDrive and a SharePoint site, with versions, metadata and sharing. It can grant itself access to OneDrive accounts for the run, then remove it.

Access to the OneDrive itself stays with its owner. A site’s Owners, Members and Visitors groups have no OneDrive equivalent and are not matched.

Getting access to OneDrive accounts

A SharePoint admin is not an admin of users’ OneDrive accounts. With the “Get access to OneDrive” option, the tool adds the migration account as admin of every OneDrive it cannot open, at the start of the run. Each grant is logged and removed at the end of the run if you tick the matching option. In certificate mode, the application already has access to every OneDrive.

Finding the right OneDrive

In the interface, search for the person by name or address: the OneDrive URL is read from their profile. For dozens of accounts, prepare the Excel template with one row per person and an identity table.

Frequently asked questions

Do users lose their sharing?

Direct sharing with people, on a folder or a file, is carried over to the target OneDrive. Sharing links are not migrated.

Can I migrate the OneDrive of a deleted account?

As long as the OneDrive still exists in the source tenant, yes: it can go to a site or another OneDrive. Once its retention expires, it is no longer reachable.

Do OneDrive files keep their versions?

Yes, as on a site: every version is replayed in order, with its author and date.
