Tauri Migration

SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) or Tauri Migration?

SPMT is free and does very well what it was built for: bringing on-premises content into Microsoft 365. It does not take SharePoint Online as a source, and that is where the two tools part ways.

Short answer

Choose SPMT to migrate SharePoint Server 2010 to 2019, or a file share whose NTFS permissions must be kept. Choose Tauri Migration to move from one Microsoft 365 tenant to another, migrate OneDrive accounts between tenants or restructure SharePoint Online.

When SPMT is the right choice

  • Your content sits on a SharePoint Server farm: Tauri Migration does not take it as a source.
  • You are migrating a file share and must keep NTFS permissions exactly.
  • The budget is zero and the need is a one-off move into Microsoft 365.

When SPMT cannot help

  • Your sites are already in SharePoint Online and must change tenant.
  • OneDrive accounts must move from one tenant to another.
  • An internal restructure must move libraries with their columns, versions and permissions.
  • You need to bring files back from SharePoint to a file share.

Both together

Nothing stops you combining them on one project: SPMT for the SharePoint Server farm moving to the tenant, Tauri Migration for the sites already in Microsoft 365 that change tenant or structure.

Frequently asked questions

Can SPMT migrate from one tenant to another?

No. Microsoft’s documentation lists SharePoint Server, SharePoint Foundation and file shares as sources; SharePoint Online is not one of them.

Why pay for a tool when SPMT is free?

For the cases SPMT does not cover: tenant to tenant, OneDrive between tenants, restructuring SharePoint Online, moving back to a file share.

Test it on your own tenant

The 14-day trial migrates 10% of every library, with versions, metadata and permissions. After you subscribe, an incremental run migrates the rest.
